About licensecompat.com
What this is
A license compatibility checker for developers. Select the open-source licenses present in the components you're combining and how you distribute the result; the site returns a verdict, the resulting work's license, and an obligations checklist.
How verdicts are derived
Every fact on this site comes from a single reviewed dataset covering 16 common open-source licenses — their categories, obligations, and known pairwise exceptions. A deterministic resolution engine applies the dataset's rules; the checker, the 16 license pages, the 120 pairwise pages, and the compatibility matrix are all generated from the same engine output. Nothing is hand-written per page, so a correction to the dataset propagates everywhere at once.
What this is not
Legal advice. License compatibility has court-untested edges, and the verdicts here are general guidance for engineering decisions. Confirm commercial-critical decisions with qualified counsel.
Scope
The dataset covers the 16 licenses that account for the overwhelming majority of open-source components in practice. Source-available licenses (BUSL, SSPL, Elastic) are out of scope for now.
